I think Diane Keaton in Annie Hall was the first time I was ever conscious of how a woman could wear something so comfortable, that absolutely represented her style and made her look beautiful and was utterly attainable as well. An absolute icon!
I love men’s tailoring too. The fabrics, buttons, interesting linings. Have you read “The Coat Route” by Meg Lukens Noonan? A wonderful insight into the world of tailoring. Although so much has changed since it’s been written.
I have just seen and enjoyed the Tirza Garwood exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery. I'm a fan as I have one of her wood engravings and have read her autobiography 'Long Live Great Bardfield'. I particularly liked her collages of houses which I hadn't known about and the poignant oil and water colour paintings from the end of her life. Most exhibits are from private collections so are not often on view to the public.
I always enjoy a trip to the Dulwich gallery but was disappointed to find that they no longer offer a National Art Pass discount for their exhibitions, only for the permanent collection.
A definite yes to Saoirse Ronan's costumes in Little Women, especially the, what my mother would call, off-beat blue and the slatey greys. Also thank you for including the close up of Paul's pinstripe jacket so that we can see the slubby texture.
Agree with you about men's tailoring. Even M&S Men's department have far better quality fabrics and tailoring than the women's. Being a little person (5'1") I buy the teenage boys clothes in there. Practical, comfortable, well made and about half the price!
For not having a post in mind, you fared quite well. I, too, appreciate tailoring, but find that a relaxed fit and attitude serve me better these days. Well-made, with Pockets, in durable, washable fabrics, all 'cause I live in the Land of Mud and Fir Needles.
Another wonderful Sunday post! His Girl Friday is a gem, though the quick wit and rapid repartee flies so fast that the first time I saw it, I couldn’t make out half the dialogue. For Roz Russell in over-the-top clothes and hats, The Women is a must-see. And one of my sisters will be getting the Beatles book for Christmas., thanks for the inspiration.
I’m with you a the men’s fashion. In ready to wear in the US the women’s clothing is so shoddy now but the men’s clothing is still pretty good. I just discovered a sweater I used to wear 25 years ago that was a man’s cardigan with leather buttons that I am now wearing again. Shopping in my closet. Cant wait to see what you make Jane.
I went to see Little Women with a knitty friend when it came out and we spent most of the film whispering excitedly about the outfits, especially the sort of hybrid scarf/jumper things that I now see popping up on my social media feeds.
I also adore Cary Grant and always have for so many many reasons! Please google Cary Grant Christmas 1967 on YouTube as he narrates the most charming little lullaby/Christmas song to his own little baby. I'd send the link but couldn't figure out how to do so through this comment section !
I know very little about dressmaking, tailoring or the Beatles, but as always I found this piece fascinating! And I love your choice of photos. Cary Grant wore anything well!
I watched the Greta Girwig 'Little Women' on Friday, funnily, and did observe that Jo's clothes looked lovely, comfortable, suited her beautiful colouring, while Amy spent most of the time trussed up like a fashionable, expensive turkey.
Seriously impressed by your dressmaking skills and enjoyed the insight into the Beatle's attire.
Watching Cary Grant still takes my breath away.
Yes to Diane Keaton from Annie Hall days to the present. She has such great style and knows what works for her

Always an engaging read.
If you could just make two of everything Jane, I’m a size 14! 👍
