Those socks!! Just gorgeous! And thank you for brining the work of Helen Clapcott to my (our?) attention - I wasn’t aware of her work but would love to see more of it. The slightly ethereal quality she brings to industrial landscapes is mesmerising. Happy Sunday, Jane.
Just spent some lovely time on Helen's website. What fascinating work, I had never heard of her before. Thank you. Lovely quilt as well, are they Kaffe Fassett fabrics?
Love the quilt. May I ask if the strips across the squares are added after or are the squares divided first ? I’m not an experienced quilter but do like the randomness of this design. More info would be welcome x
What commitment to rewrite it! Thank you! As ever, a very interesting newsletter, Jane ☺️ We are lucky.
Back in 1999 I was on the platform at Sloane Square station and the person I was with said, you see that enclosed bridge running diagonally above our heads? That's a culvert carrying one of the "lost" rivers of London!
Hmmm..... Substack lost your newsletter AND somehow didn't send this one to my inbox. So I came here to make sure you're okay and of course not miss one of your delightful newsletters! In doing so, I realized just how much I look forward to these Sunday treats. (I subscribe to several Substacks and never notice if these others don't arrive, let alone hunt one down!) Thank you!
Those gorgeous wee feet!!! Take pictures and pictures and pictures of those fluffy rolls that disappear all too soon… and I adore the art decor vibe going on in these paintings…..
Love this, so much to think about, and thank you for the introduction to the work of Helen Clapcott. Beautiful quilt, and of course lovely baby sock feet.
Inspired me to visit Manchester as it's eluded me over the years! Got a Sunday morning conversation going here about towns and cities industries in UK in 60s. Growing up we learnt Sheffield made steel and we checked cutlery in cafes snd it really did say Made in Sheffield! Staffordshire was home to Mum's beloved china... l could go on. Evocative paintings of demolition by Helen Clapcott capture so much. Also inspired to start collecting Kaffes fabrics to make a quilt. I first made 2, 10 years back, for my daughters, inspired ( word of the day) by your The Gentle Art of Domesticity book. Thanks for the nudge Jane.
I was doing some mending recently and found a packet of needles marked “made in Sheffield” in my great aunt’s sewing box. She died in the early 60s so they’re at least that old if not older. Nice and sharp they were, too!

Thanks! It's a mix of fabrics including some by KF.

I cut squares first which I then cut in half and insert a strip, then cut in half in the other direction and insert a second strip to make a cross.
I was wondering the same thing!

My pleasure!

Sorry about your missing post— hopefully it’s just gone out for a stroll and will return soon. And oh, those green lapels and red shirts—so stylish!
