The French have a word for when you are in an unfamiliar place, feeling disoriented and far from home. Dépaysé encpasulates nicely the idea of not just being out of your own pays or country, but also a bit discombobulated. I thought coming to Hong Kong would make me feel
You evoke the sense of a fascinating place to visit and noticing such tiny details as hand painted signage is inspiring. So much of what is around us goes unnoticed every day doesnt it. Alice and Wilson look so content and at home, and you show a green side of HK which is rarely commented upon. An uplifting read.
Trouble is , I love your substack but find myself looking at this particular one and thinking ‘But, but , but, human rights? Democracy?’ As Gary Linkeker would say, isn’t this about going round 1930s Germany and discussing the wonderful design and architecture?
My daughter lives in the Netherlands - not so far but it's tough not having her in the same country. Saddened by the difficulties in sending gifts - we're both knitters and we can't now send each other knitted socks etc because of the extra costs...... People say "Oh you can send gifts on Amazon" but this doesn't work for handmade gifts.
We’ve just spent three weeks in Australia with a Google Docs itinerary, never more than three nights in one place - but really the only reason we went was to see Jane and Josh. I may have shed a tear! Safe journey home.
Lovely - they look very happy 😃
