Lovely post, I want to rush off to Suffolk right now. I am sitting in my home in a Devon village, once again the church bells are ringing out. This time the garden needs weeding, garden designer coming on Wednesday - why do so many of my expensive plants just die? 3.00pm it's Providence Chapel at Throwleigh this afternoon, after the service we have the most wonderful tea, cakes and cut rounds in the schoolroom. Do join us. It is just lovely. We are on facebook. Jane how are you on old corrugated iron buildings? There are some wonderful ones out there. Dartington village hall and the best one of all Throwleigh village hall - a WW2 Nissen hut, it was a cinema for GI's in Tavistock. It's heavenly.

Thank you, and thanks for the 'wriggly tin' recommendations. I'm a big fan of corrugated iron buildings and 'tin tabernacles'!

I went on holiday to Tregaron in mid Wales recently. Lots of wriggly tin buildings new and old, large and tiny. When the roads were metalled in the 1930's tin bungalows were built for the workmen, some of them are still standing. Jane Beck Welsh Blankets Ltd is is housed in one. Mid Wales is a good place for old milk churn stands.

Yes indeed, reading every Sunday morning with much pleasure, and I am often surprised to find that you are enjoying places, ideas and things which I have been enjoying too. And other times you put me on to new things to enjoy, and sometimes things I am never going to like, as it should be! In all your writing and pictures have been a source of great delight dating back to "The Gentle Art of Domesticity", which is referred to pretty frequently here for the rock bun and flapjack recipes. Thank you again. Anna

Loved your post. Next time you are tempted East, you might explore the almshouses at Aldringham and Thorpeness (between Leiston and Aldeburgh), both the bequests of Margaret Ogilvie, and those at Boyton, between Woodbridge and Bawdsey. Modest beauty with plenty of hollyhocks

Brilliant almshouse tips, thank you! I've seen the very grand one in Thorpeness, but clearly need to have a look at the others.

Thank you for another lovely ride-along. The bit about the crinkle crankle walls was excellent. Here in the US we need some distraction, too.

I join everyone else in wishing you a good resolution to your problems. I also find that filling my mind and my time with distractions works better than engaging in repetitive activities that give me too much space to dwell on things. I wonder what the Beatles were distracting themselves with reading?

Incessant press intrusion and daft/personal/unanswerable questions, maybe!

Distraction can be lovely as it will push us from our boundaries to something new. For me, it allows my thoughts to quieten and, somehow, resolve what sparked the need to begin with. Hoping you find that resolution and quiet! x

I too hope your distraction is resolved quickly and happily. On the subject of The Beatles have you read The Love You Make by Peter Brown? Gossipy account of their early years by an insider. Very readable

The Higgins is our local museum and gallery so it's lovely to see it being bigger up! We finally saw the Bawden exhibition a couple of weeks ago and loved it - so nice to have a show that's cheering and fun. Glad you enjoyed it too.

I did wonder last week if all was well. Staying in the five minutes that you are currently in is always a good thing. Even if it is not quite what you hoped - sorry about your label experience. I too am amazed how you do so much. You never mention theatre really. But I would say if you need a really good happy two and a half hours of unexpurgated joy - go and see imelda staunton in hello dolly at the palladium…..

I don't go to the theatre very often, it's true (but make an exception for Chekhov). Hello, Dolly! sounds great, though (I love a good musical).
