I was talking to a friend who said how much she hated packing parcels. I suggested to her that she should look on it as a hand-skill, not a chore. It worked!

There is something to be said for being in that state of flow. Where time escapes me and I’m completely consumed in sewing. It’s wonderful! Love your hand made books. That is a true art!

These are so beautiful, Jane! I have just started binding books myself (just two simple books so far) and it's absolutely perfect for people who like fabric, pattern and paper. Love it so much. I am so happy to see you are doing it too.

So many threads of interest to pick up, and you strike a number of chords such as the cocoon of concentration, which I experience when painting a watercolour that is going well, never a certainty! French references much appreciated too as an Englishwoman recently moved to France. France Culture my go-to.

I love your bright covered books and the tulip-like stitching. And I love the absorption I find when I sit down with paper, brushes and my watercolor palette. Big fan of France Culture and the excellent Radio France app too; you might get a kick of this program which was devoted to Celeste Albaret, Proust's housekeeper and altogether keeper of the flame. https://www.radiofrance.fr/franceculture/podcasts/grande-traversee-celeste-albaret-chez-monsieur-proust

I’m in awe of those decorative spines! I did a self taught class in book binding last summer and have made a few more here and there. I love it and want to improve (as well as making my own marbled paper!). Did you take a course, may I ask which you did? Any recommendations?

One of the many things I love about your substacks, and your blog when you did it, is that you find the most beautiful pictures to accompany your words. How go you find them and does it take you ages?

Oh yes, so true - all of it! Thanks for a great read on this frosty morning. Best wishes, Joan.

I love your book binding books.

If I knew you and we were chatting about podcasts I would say ‘ooooo Jane have you tried sewing while listening to ‘The Rest is History, and ‘Backlisted’ ?or ‘In Moscow’s shadows ‘ but that is rather more niche. None of them have silly celebs going on a journey

Good morning Jane, your beautiful books are an inspiration, thank you. I am teetering on the edge of book binding, at an early stage of sourcing materials. What thickness of thread do you use for your spines and approximately how much thread does it take to stitch one book, your advice would be much appreciated. Best wishes Laura
